Bert Cameron is a celebrated Jamaican sprinter known for his prowess in the 400 meters. Born in Spanish Town, Saint Catherine Parish, he first gained international recognition at the 1978 Commonwealth Games, securing a silver medal in the 4×400 meters relay. Cameron’s Olympic journey began in 1980, and he represented Jamaica in three consecutive Summer Olympics. Cameron became the first-ever World Champion in the 400 meters at the inaugural World Championships in Athletics in 1983. He also claimed the 400 meters title at the 1982 Commonwealth Games and won multiple medals at regional competitions, including gold at the Central American and Caribbean Games. Despite an injury during the 1984 Olympics, he made a remarkable comeback to qualify for the finals but was unable to compete due to his injury. Outside of athletics, Cameron has been a prominent coach in Jamaica, mentoring athletes like Jermaine Gonzales.
