Donald O’Riley Quarrie

Athlete Bio:

Donald Quarrie is one of Jamaica’s most iconic and versatile sprinters, excelling in both the 100m and 200m events. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Quarrie attended Camperdown High School, where his athletic potential became evident early on. He later moved to the United States to attend the University of Southern California (USC), where he further honed his sprinting abilities and became one of the top sprinters in the world.

Quarrie is best known for his Olympic performances in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the 1976 Montreal Olympics, he won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m, becoming only the second Jamaican sprinter to win Olympic gold. His 200m victory cemented his place among the world’s elite sprinters. Quarrie also competed in the 1972 and 1980 Olympics, where he earned additional medals in relay events, including a bronze in the 4x100m relay in Moscow. His consistency over a long career made him one of the most respected figures in track and field.

In addition to his Olympic success, Quarrie dominated the Commonwealth Games, winning gold in both the 100m and 200m at multiple editions.
